Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced the launch of e-RUPI, a digital payment solution aimed at improving transparency and targeted benefit delivery. The e-RUPI facility is available for health services and will be expanded to other segments as well.

e-RUPI is a cashless and contactless instrument for digital payment. It is a QR code or SMS string-based e-voucher that is delivered to the beneficiaries' mobile phones. Users of this seamless one-time payment mechanism will be able to redeem the voucher at the service provider without the need for a card, digital payments app, or internet banking access.

The best advantage is that the service provider will only receive the money after the payment is successfully completed.

The National Payments Corporation of India developed it on its UPI platform in collaboration with the Department of Financial Services, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the National Health Authority.

Several programs have been launched over the years to ensure that benefits reach their intended beneficiaries in a targeted and leakproof manner, with few touchpoints between the government and the beneficiary. This vision of good governance is carried forward by the concept of an electronic platform.

"Today the country is giving a new dimension to digital governance. eRUPI voucher is going to play a huge role in making digital transactions, and DBT more effective. This will help everyone in targeted, transparent, and leakage-free delivery," the Prime Minister said while launching e-RUPI.

He went on to say that if any general organization or non-govt organization wants to help someone with their treatment, education, or any other work, they will be able to give eRUPI instead of cash. It will ensure that the money that has been donated is used for the same purpose for which it was given.

The electronic system will also benefit the private sector, as they can use them as a part of their employee welfare and corporate social responsibility programs. It will also be useful for delivering services under schemes that provide drugs and nutritional support under various Mother and Child Welfare schemes and TB eradication programs, as well as drugs and diagnostics under schemes such as Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
