The BharatGPT group, backed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries and a consortium of top engineering institutes, is set to introduce 'Hanooman' next month.
The ChatGPT-style service is developed in collaboration with eight Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Reliance Jio Infocomm, and the central government.
Focusing on different sectors
'Hanooman' is designed to interact in 11 local languages, focusing on sectors such as healthcare, governance, financial services, and education. It promises to bring multimodal AI capabilities, including text-to-text, text-to-speech, and text-to-video conversions, to the Indian populace.
The BharatGPT ecosystem represents a unique private-public partnership, the first of its kind in India, involving major players across various sectors.
Addressing the diverse linguistic and cultural nuances of India
Led by IIT Bombay, this consortium includes seven other IITs and is backed by the Department of Science and Technology, Seetha Mahalaxmi Healthcare (SML), and Reliance Jio.
The collaboration aims to leverage the vast potential of AI to address the diverse linguistic and cultural nuances of India, making technology accessible to a broader segment of the population.
Offering services in 22 Indian languages
'Hanooman' stands out with its ability to offer services in 22 Indian languages, with plans to extend its capabilities further. The model is set to be open-sourced, with its foundational language models ranging up to 40 billion parameters in size.
The model not only aims to enhance accessibility but also to foster innovation in AI applications across critical sectors. SML is exploring partnerships with BFSI enterprises, healthcare organizations, and mobile app providers to offer model-as-a-service or create specialized models by fine-tuning the 'Hanooman' series.
Challenges and competitions
Building Indian LLMs (Large Language Models) poses significant challenges, primarily due to the sourcing of quality datasets in Indian languages. Improving the quality of these datasets, whether in text, audio, or video form, is crucial for the development of effective and efficient AI models.
'Hanooman' enters a competitive landscape with other language models like Ola’s Krutrim, SaravamAI’s OpenHathi, and IIT-Madras’s Airavata model, each vying to make a mark in the Indic AI race.
