Social media giants Facebook and Instagram experienced a significant outage, affecting users worldwide on Tuesday night. The disruption also extended to Threads, another Meta-owned platform, leaving tens of thousands unable to access their accounts, refresh feeds, or post new content.
Reports of the outage first emerged in India, quickly spreading across various parts of the globe.
Users faced a myriad of issues, including being unexpectedly logged out of their accounts on Facebook and Instagram, with some unable to log back in. Instagram users specifically reported problems refreshing pages, viewing stories, and loading comments. Threads users encountered a complete shutdown, with error messages blocking access to the app.
The outage tracking website Downdetector.com recorded a sharp increase in reports, with over 300,000 complaints for Facebook and more than 20,000 for Instagram. The site, which aggregates user-reported issues from multiple sources, highlighted the scale of the disruption.
Amidst the outage, many turned to the microblogging site X (formerly Twitter) to share their experiences and seek updates. The rapid spread of reports on social media underscored the widespread impact of the outage, affecting a vast number of users globally.
Despite the flurry of user reports and social media discussions, Meta has not yet officially acknowledged the issue or provided any explanation for the outage. The sudden and widespread nature of the problem has left many users frustrated and looking for answers.
