Amazon India Partners with Ministry of Labour and Employment

Ecommerce giant Amazon's India unit Amazon India has signed an MoU with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to leverage the National Career Service (NCS) portal.

The partnership is aimed at enhancing job accessibility by allowing Amazon and its staffing agencies to post open job positions on the NCS platform.

Notably, Amazon is the first e-commerce company to collaborate with the Ministry of Labour and Employment for the NCS portal.

Enabling job seekers to access employment opportunities

The initiative will enable job seekers from across the country to apply for various roles at Amazon and its affiliated agencies.

"The NCS portal is developing into a one-stop platform for accessing employment opportunities across sectors and industries. With our partnership with Amazon, we are expanding job accessibility for India’s youth, empowering them to discover the right roles and build a future filled with opportunities and growth," said Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Labour and Employment.

Bridging employment gaps across the country

The collaboration marks a significant step toward addressing employment gaps by connecting job seekers and employers through a centralized platform.

Amazon India will regularly post available job opportunities in its corporate offices and operations network, including roles in logistics, technology, and customer service.

The company plans to tap into the vast pool of job seekers registered on the NCS portal, which boasts over 87 lakh active candidates as of FY 2024.

"We are excited to partner with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to combine our pursuit of candidates with NCS's vast network. It's important to spread awareness of open roles, improve job matching, and provide an easy way for jobseekers to search, especially for underserved communities. By listing work opportunities across Amazon on the National Career Service portal, jobseekers across India will have access to the various roles we offer," said Deepti Varma, Vice President, HR/ People Experience and Technology, Amazon Stores, India, Japan and Emerging Markets.

Inclusivity and local hiring a key focus

A notable aspect of the partnership is its emphasis on promoting inclusivity in the workforce. Amazon and the Ministry will work together to ensure equal employment access for women, persons with disabilities, and candidates from diverse backgrounds.

The MoU will also facilitate local hiring through job fairs organized at Model Career Centres (MCCs), enabling direct interactions between job seekers and Amazon’s recruitment teams.

Union Minister Sushri Shobha Karandlaje highlighted the inclusive nature of the agreement, stating, "Integration with a centralised platform like NCS will reduce hiring costs and time and streamline hiring of verified professionals. It is a way forward for economic inclusion."

NCS portal’s role in employment expansion

The National Career Service (NCS) portal, operational since 2015, is a key initiative by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to provide a range of employment-related services. The platform offers career counseling, vocational guidance, and job listings, with over 15-18 lakh job opportunities typically posted at any given time.

The portal has seen significant growth, with over 60 lakh active job seekers and 33.50 lakh active employers.

The Ministry is also in the process of upgrading the NCS portal to include advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) for a more efficient and user-friendly experience for both job seekers and employers.

Amazon has played a vital role in the employment landscape of India, having created over 13 lakh direct and indirect jobs since its inception. In addition to its permanent workforce, the company frequently offers seasonal job opportunities, especially during festive seasons.

For instance, earlier this month, Amazon announced the creation of more than 1.1 lakh seasonal jobs across its operations network.
